The Best Smartphones 2018

Huawei P20 (March 2018)
While other phone makers were displaying their new wares at Mobile World Congress, Huawei was showing off its MateBook X Pro laptop. But that doesn't mean the company isn't prepping a new flagship device. Instead, it's planning a March 27 press event where it's expected to release the new P20 phone. Leaked images reportedly of the new phone suggest that the P20 will have extremely thin bezels, dual rear cameras (though some rumors suggest there will be a third lens) and stereo speakers.

LG "Judy" (June 2018)
Mobile World Congress came and went without a successor to last year's LG G6 (pictured here), as LG moves away from annual updates just for the sake of rolling out a new phone on a set schedule. But the electronics giant may still have something big cooking: VentureBeat reports that a new LG phone code-named "Judy" is in the works for a June release. The phone will reportedly use an MLCD+ panel for its 6.1-inch display for a significantly brighter screen than what you'd get from an OLED panel. Such a screen would also consume less power. Other rumored features include dual rear cameras with wide f/1.6 apertures and stereo speakers to provide "boombox"-like sound.

Sony Xperia XZ2 and XZ2 Compact (April 2018)
These latest flagships join the XZ lineup with a new processor (a Snapdragon 845) and an extra-wide display with an 18:9 aspect ratio that re-invigorates the boxy design you've come to expect from Sony over the years. The 5.7-inch Xperia XZ2 is the premium model, but it was the easier-to-hold 5-inch XZ2 Compact that grabbed our attention at Mobile World Congress. Both phones offer a 19-megapixel Motion Eye camera that's been upgraded to capture 960-frames-per-second video at 1080p resolution. Prices haven't been announced, but the latest Xperia models are expected to arrive later this spring.
